Remote: 100% in Poland and Spain (they can unfortunately not hire candidates from other locations right now)

Level of seniority: 3+

Salary: Up to 80K Eur/Year but open to discuss above for the right person

Brainly is a polish scale-up company started back in 2009 with the goal to create a community where students could help each other out with schoolwork online. Brainly is today the world’s largest social learning network with more than 350 million global users each month. The company has more than 500 employees scattered across Poland, Spain, and the US.

The company has been growing exponentially over the past couple of years and has successfully managed to become the market leader and most preferred platform for students around the world. They recently raised $150M in funding from investors such as Point Nine, Naspers, and General Catalyst Partners and are now looking to scale across multiple teams.

Every engineer at Brainly will be working on highly scalable solutions. The engineering team is around 50 people today, in addition to data teams. Most of the engineers are located in either Poland or Spain, working remotely or from the office so everyone is located within the same time zone. Their tech stack is React and Javascript on the front-end, and Go plus some Python on the back-end. They work on microservice architecture and use modern tools for everything related to the infrastructure, cloud, and DevOps such as AWS, Docker, Kubernetes, Terraform, Grafana, and so on.

We are now looking for a Search Engineer to join the Search Team for Brainly's new vertical - Textbook Solutions and built out their search and personalization engine. The ideal candidate will leverage their background to build search capabilities across their self-paced learning products and further support building our personalized recommendations to their users. This is a unique opportunity to directly contribute to the launch of their Textbook Solutions product and impact on the lives of hundreds of millions of students globally.


  • Design, implement, test, and maintain Brainly’s Textbook Search Platform components in the context of a multi-tier, scalable, high-volume, and reliable distributed systems that perform 24×7
  • Leverage Elasticsearch infrastructure and search/ML techniques to solve challenging problems in relevance ranking and semantic search
  • Implement, extend, and modularize our federated search system architecture to meet 10x growth in search volume and diverse search intents from students, parents, and educators
  • Collaborate with ML, UX, and product to ideate and execute on our exciting content discovery roadmap


  • 3+ years experience developing search algorithms and applications using Elasticsearch
  • Solid understanding of object-oriented and functional programming and experience writing web services with a general-purpose programming language (Go or Python preferred)
  • Hands-on experience with developing and maintaining distributed systems
  • Ability to quickly understand technical and business requirements and be able to translate into technical design and implementation
  • High level of self-organization and ability to make your own decisions

It would be nice if you also have:

  • Experience with text processing, NLP, and data pipelining using Spark or Athena
  • Experience with Docker, Kubernetes, and AWS Ecosystem
