We're looking for someone to join our team who is passionate about leading a diverse engineering team that is building systems to decode the Chinese Government’s manipulation of the information space. We combine signal-rich proprietary data, novel AI-Powered technology, and world-class expertise to deliver valuable insights to our US government and Fortune 50 clients.  

As VP of Engineering at Thresher, you will be responsible for leading the development of the engineering team and shaping the technical vision of the company.  You'll work with our Principal Engineers and Directors of Product, Data Science, and Content. We use data and machine learning to make a real difference in the world...not just sell more stuff. Job Description

Some of the things you’ll tackle in this position are:

  • Lead the development of the engineering team, including coaching team members’ performance and career development. You’ll have responsibility for hiring, promotions, and compensation strategy
  • Design a scaling plan for the engineering team that will support the product vision. You’ll design and own the team’s budget, personnel growth, and communication processes 
  • Shape the technical vision of the company so that we tap all the expertise we have at Thresher to deliver value to the customer. Identify investments in new technologies to support the vision
  • Identify opportunities where engineering can directly, or in partnership with the data science team and subject matter experts, create value for customers
  • Design and lead Thresher’s AWS strategy, including budget
  • Develop and execute a security program and investments for the team—and the company more broadly. 
  • If desired, opportunity to be an individual contributor on the engineering team

Qualifications

Here are some of the skills you’ll need to dive into the role:

  • Experience leading and managing a self-organizing team of engineers 
  • Experience working on an enterprise software platform and/or API product 
  • In-depth understanding of Agile software development methodologies 
  • Capability to understand and consider user needs when making trade-offs
  • Ability to move between the strategic and the tactical
  • Ability to communicate well verbally and in writing at all levels of technical expertise, including across functions to non-technical team members
  • Ability to thrive in an environment with competing and shifting priorities
  • Ability to work in a team with a diverse set of skills and life experiences
  • Attention to detail
  • 10+ years of software development experience, with at least 2 in a senior managerial role
  • Ownership of a solution that is deployed in a cloud environment, with a strong preference for AWS

Nice-to-haves include:

  • Experience with Python, the ELK stack, and/or data science tools and infrastructure
  • Experience working in a growing 25-person company
  • Experience productionizing Data Science insights into software platforms
  • Experience working on a product bought by governments and the Fortune 100
